The Key Facts About Rabbits

Rabbits-Oryctolagus-caniculas-Pest-Solutions-Pest-ControlRabbits which are generally nocturnal, live communally, usually in a system of burrows known as a warren. Some or all of the entrances to the warren may be hidden away in dense vegetation. Rabbits (Oryctolagus caniculas) will also live under sheds, amongst rubble and in piles of dead tree roots and branches. During the day they can often be found lying above the ground in sheltered spots.

Rabbits will eat a wide range of herbage, but are able and prefer to select the more nutritious species. They are therefore greatly attracted to agricultural crops that tend to be nutritious and locally plentiful. However if unavailable they will switch to feeding on whatever is available, including bark from trees.

Rabbits (Oryctolagus caniculas) Significance of Control

Rabbit’s are classed as a pest as they can cause damage from both their feeding and digging activities.

In extreme cases of damage by digging, Rabbit burrows can undermine embankments and structures resulting in collapse. More commonly, burrows and surface digging can damage high quality amenity grasslands such as golf courses, bowling greens and sports pitches.

Rabbits (Oryctolagus caniculas) feeding activities can also seriously damage and kill newly planted or even mature shrubs and trees by damaging leading shoots and stripping bark. Individual trees can be very expensive to replace and highlights situations where Rabbit control is required.

More importantly Rabbits can cause damage to cereals, crops and market gardens which can result in serious economic losses to farmers and growers.

Rabbit FAQ

Common Rabbit Control Questions & Tips

No matter what pest you may have an issue or wish to protect your home or business against, Pest Solutions are here to help.

  • What are common signs of rabbit activity?

Signs include burrows (warrens), scrapes, runs, droppings, fur, and gnawed vegetation or tree bark. In addition, “Rabbit lawns” which can be characterised by closely grazed patches of grass and square-cut stems are also clear indicators of rabbit activity in your area.

  • Why are rabbits considered a serious pest in the UK?

Rabbits are serious agricultural and garden pests. Their feeding damages crops, gardens, and young trees, while their burrowing undermines embankments, sports grounds, and structures. Even low numbers can cause economically significant damage to grassland and cereal crops.

  • When is the best time of year to control rabbits?

The most effective time is between November and March. Rabbit numbers are naturally lowest then, and culling before the breeding season reduces population growth. Control is also easier when vegetation has died back, improving access to burrows.
