Pest Solutions takes a moment to acknowledge the importance of World Pest Day in 2025. World Pest Day takes place every year on the 6th of June and is an occasion for people within the pest control industry to discuss the common challenges in the pest control industry.
World Pest Day also gives us the opportunity to highlight steps we have taken as a trusted pest control company in the UK to face these challenges head on and help break down some of these notable barriers within this industry.
What is World Pest Day 2025?
Before we take a deeper look at what is World Pest Day and its purpose, it’s important to ensure that we understand what a pest is. A pest is any organism that can cause human beings harm or concern, whether it may be through spreading disease, impacting quality of life or by affecting public health and safety.
World Pest Day or World Pest Awareness Day 2025 at stated above is a unique opportunity for people within the pest control industry and community to help spread awareness and challenge the public’s preconceived notions of what pest control is and who pest controllers are and its importance as an industry.
For added context, World Pest Day was said to be first introduced in 2017 by the Chinese Pest Control Association and has since been adopted and observed by many organisations and associations across the globe. It has an important purpose and that is to spread awareness.
When there are common problems or challenges that have been identified and are faced in a particular industry, it is important to address them accordingly. But before they can be addressed, as it often requires a coordinated effort to tackle these issues, which is where awareness and sparking conversation around it all becomes increasingly important.
Overcoming Challenges in the Pest Control Industry
The pest control industry and pest control companies play such a crucial role in terms of safeguarding public health and safety. No one wants to deal with pests in their home or business. Being able to reach out to trained professionals who are qualified to carry out appropriate and reliable treatments helps more people feel safer and reassured when they’re experiencing a pest problem which can affect them in a multitude of ways. To be able to effectively help and assist people with pest infestations, pest control companies must manage and deal with some common challenges that the work that we do brings. These include:
Increased Treatment Resistance Levels
Taking care of pest infestations is a matter of public health and safety. To do so, time is of the essence. A common barrier to efficient and effective pest control is when treatments that are supposed to work well on a given pest species, start to exhibit signs of being less effective. There has been some valid concern and evidence of increased resistance levels to treatment that certain pests have exhibited. This, understandably, has a significant impact not only on treatment effectiveness but it also effects both pest controllers and pest control companies alike.
As an example, anticoagulant resistance has been observed and detected in Norway Rats and house mice in the UK (CRRU, 2023). Increased resistance to anticoagulants means the reduced efficacy of certain compounds against specific pest species. This can have a noticeable effect on the treatment times of pest infestations, but it could also result in an increased spread of this resistance to more populations or even higher resistance levels, further mutations and instances of hybrid resistance.
Frequent Legislative Changes and New Regulations
There are so many changes that occur in the world around us every single day and we don’t always know what exactly to expect in a few years or a decade from now. When it comes to pest control, everything from the impact of climate change, new invasive species or new studies that provide more information can bring about new legislation or changes to existing regulations here in the UK.
For instance, the Spring Traps Approval (Scotland) Amendment Order 2023 was an amendment to the original order from 2011 (Gov.uk, 2023). Changes made to this order which came into effect on the 1st of January 2024 (BPCA). The amendments made to this order included more detailed statements on specific approved trap deployment locations and changes to the type of pest species that particular traps could target. Such changes can significantly impact operations and the efficiency at which a pest infestation is resolved and therefore, investment into proper training and access to relevant resources is paramount to stay up-to-date and be responsive to all changes that occur.
Negative Public Perception about Pest Control
Pest control as a field and pest controllers are often perceived negatively by members of the public. This is because there are a lot of misconceptions and preconceived notions about pest control that people hold on to and this can be a significant challenge as it can affect a pest controller’s ability to effectively treat a given pest infestation.
Any place or location can be susceptible to pest infestations, when people speak about not targeting pests, they often fail to realise the environmental and human impact of failing to do. For instance, certain invasive species that have been introduced to the UK have had a noticeable and documented negative impact on the populations of local native species, like in the case of grey squirrels and red squirrels. Without pest control, these invasive species could continue to run wild and result in the potential extinction of some of our local wildlife.
In addition, many people understandably feel physical discomfort and emotional distress when they find pests in their home or place of work. Which is where effective pest control when carried out by trained and fully qualified professionals can help mitigate such issues by handling the pest problem and help to reliably safeguard people’s homes and businesses against future pest infestations.
