The wire is tensioned between brackets fixed along the roof edges or ridge tiles, with a perimeter straining wire that holds the whole system taut.
The spacing is designed so that the wires sit slightly closer together than the wingspan of herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls. This means both species of birds can’t land or take off without their wings brushing the wires.
That contact is what makes the system work.

It physically prevents the birds from spreading their wings far enough to land comfortably.
