Daddi Long Legs Bird Deterrent

The Daddi Long Legs system is a rotating bird deterrent designed to stop pest birds from landing on flat, open surfaces where traditional spikes and netting aren’t practical.

It uses thin stainless steel arms that rotate freely in the wind, sweeping across the protected area and creating an unpredictable moving barrier that pigeons, gulls, and other birds won’t land near.

No injury to birds, no permanent fixings into delicate surfaces, and no visual clutter on your roof or building.

How the Daddi Long Legs Stainless Steel Bird Deterrent Works

The Daddi Long Legs (sometimes called a bird spider or rotating bird deterrent) is a simple but effective design.

A central base mounts to the surface you want to protect, from which thin stainless steel arms extend outward in all directions.

Each arm is tipped with a weighted plastic bobble that bounces in the wind, keeping the arms sweeping in an unpredictable arc even in a light breeze.

The whole unit rotates freely on a bearing, responding to wind from any direction without needing power, batteries, or electronics. This means the system requires virtually no maintenance once installed.

There is no injury and no trapping to the birds, making it a completely humane bird deterrent.

Why It Helps Prevent Birds from Landing

Birds like pigeons and seagulls are cautious about landing near moving objects because they can’t predict the movement path.

Any bird that is brave enough to attempt landing will encounter the bouncing wire tips against its wings, creating just enough disruption to persuade them to move on.

It is a perfect solution for light to medium bird infestations.

Surfaces Daddi Long Legs Rotating Bird Spider Work Best

The Daddi Long Legs works best on flat, open surfaces where birds land and perch rather than nest.

It’s designed for light to medium pressure situations and it’s ideal for surfaces where spikes would be impractical, netting would be ugly, and where you need a discreet deterrent that doesn’t alter the appearance of the building.

Flat Roofs

Flat roofs are one of the most common applications.

Pigeons and gulls roost on flat roofs because the surface gives them clear sightlines and easy takeoff in all directions.

A single Daddi Long Legs unit mounted centrally can protect a circle of up to 1.5m diameter or 2.4m diameter, depending on the arm length.

Multiple units can be spaced across larger flat roof areas to create overlapping coverage.

Air Conditioning Units

Rooftop air conditioning units attract birds because they’re warm, elevated, and often tucked away where maintenance visits are infrequent.

A Daddi Long Legs mounted on top of the unit stops birds from roosting on the casing without affecting airflow or access for servicing.

This is one of the most popular installations we carry out because the build-up of guano around AC units damages the equipment. It also creates a serious hygiene risk when AC intake draws contaminated air of dried droppings.

Boat Decks and Marine Structures

The Daddi Long Legs was originally developed for marine use, and it remains popular on boats, pontoons, and coastal structures where gulls and cormorants foul decks, canopies, and radar equipment.

The stainless steel construction handles salt spray and marine conditions without corroding, and the rotating action works well in the consistent wind found on water.

Signs, Lamp Posts, and Elevated Structures

Any flat horizontal surface that birds use as a perch can be protected with a Daddi Long Legs unit.

Sign tops, lamp post caps, chimney pots, CCTV housings, and communication equipment are all common installation points.

The unit is easy to install and is light enough to attach on surfaces that wouldn’t support heavier bird proofing methods, and it doesn’t obstruct the function of whatever it’s protecting.

Solar Panels

While netting and mesh guards are the standard approach for preventing birds, particularly pigeons, from nesting under solar panels, Daddi Long Legs units can be used on top of panels to stop birds from perching on the frame or the panel surface itself.

This is useful where droppings on the panel face reduce energy output by shading the cells.

Daddi Long Legs Specifications

The Daddi Long Legs comes in several sizes to match different surface areas.

0.6m and 1.25m Daddi Long Legs

Our two smaller units are suited to compact and defined surfaces where targeted coverage is needed rather than broad area protection.

The 0.6m Daddi Long Legs is perfect for discreet protection on sign tops, lighting fixtures, and street lights.

Whereas the 1.25m bird spider design offers wider coverage. It is perfect for AC units, chimney pots, and individual perching spots.

1.8m Daddi Long Legs

Arms extend approximately 900mm from the centre, giving a coverage diameter of around 1.8m.

Suitable for larger flat surfaces, flat roofs, boat decks, and wider areas where more coverage is needed per unit.

2.4m Daddi Long Legs

One of the largest bird barriers available, this is typically used for larger open areas.

Such as flat roofs, commercial plant areas, and wide structural platforms, where maximum coverage per unit is a priority.

For these surfaces, multiple units can be combined and spaced to eliminate any landable gaps across very large areas.

Importance of Using Stainless Steel

The UK’s wet climate is tough on metal, and coastal locations add another layer of challenge. The salt-laden air accelerates corrosion, particularly on the spindle and moving parts.

Here at Pest Solutions, we only install stainless steel Daddi Long Legs units.

Our deterrents keep working long after installation without rusting away.

Installation Options and Process

Part of what makes the Daddi Long Legs versatile is the range of mounting options available. The right method depends on the surface and whether permanent fixings are acceptable.

Screw Mount

The base is screwed directly into the surface using stainless steel fixings.

This is the most secure method and works well on flat roofs, timber decking, concrete plinths, and AC unit housings.

Adhesive Mount

Industrial-strength adhesive pads attach the base to smooth surfaces without drilling.

Useful on painted metalwork, GRP, or surfaces where you don’t want screw holes.

The bond is strong enough for permanent installation but the surface needs to be clean and dry. Therefore, our technicians will always schedule for a period with dry weather.

Weighted Base or Sandbag

A weighted sandbag sits over the base and holds the unit in place by gravity alone. No fixings into the surface at all.

This is the preferred method on membrane flat roofs where puncturing the waterproof layer isn’t acceptable, and on boats where drilling is undesirable.

It is typically the preferred method for listed and historic buildings, where the infrastructure must be protected.

Magnetic Mount

A magnetic adaptor attaches the base to any ferrous metal surface. Quick to fit, easy to reposition, and completely non-destructive.

Works well on steel sign housings, ductwork, and industrial equipment.

Professional Supply and Installation

While Daddi Long Legs units are available for DIY purchase, for maximum effectiveness and to protect against building damage, always trust a professional.

Our team ensures the units are positioned correctly for maximum coverage, mounted securely to the right surface using the appropriate method, and spaced at intervals that don’t leave gaps where birds can land between the sweep arcs.

Pest Solutions installation service includes:

Initial Site Survey

We assess the bird pressure, identify the surfaces that need protecting, and recommend the right number and size of units.

Daddi Long Legs work well for light to medium pressure situations, but where bird activity is more established, they are most effective as part of a wider integrated strategy.

Our team will always give an honest assessment of whether this product is the right solution for your problem.

Supply

We supply genuine, high-quality, weather-resistant Daddi Long Legs units in the correct size and quantity for your site.

Installation of the Pest Prevention

We mount the units securely using the appropriate fixing method for each surface. All work at height is carried out safely with the correct access equipment.

After installation, the complete head section can be temporarily removed to allow maintenance work on the structure underneath. This means engineers can service air conditioning units, inspect equipment, or carry out roof repairs without removing the entire system.

Once the maintenance is done, the head clicks back on and the deterrent is working again within seconds.

The system can also be relocated if you move premises, which makes it a long-term investment rather than a fixture tied to one building.

Integration with Other Pest Bird Control Solutions

Where Daddi Long Legs forms part of a wider bird control programme (alongside spikes, wire, or netting elsewhere on the building), we install everything as a coordinated system.
