How bird post and wire deterrent systems work
A bird wire system (sometimes called pigeon wire) uses small stainless steel bird posts fixed at intervals along the surface you want to protect.
Between the posts, thin steel wires are strung under tension, held taut by springs at each end.
The wires sit at a height that puts them in the way of any bird trying to land on the ledge below.
When a pigeon or gull approaches the ledge, the wires present a barrier between the bird and the landing surface.
The bird can’t spread its feet to grip the ledge because the wires are in the way, and if it does manage to perch, the sprung wire moves under its weight and creates an unstable, uncomfortable position.
After one or two failed attempts, the bird abandons the ledge and looks for an unprotected perch elsewhere.
The bases are drilled or glued to the ledge using stainless steel fixings depending on the surface material.
The wire itself is thin enough to be virtually invisible from ground level but strong enough to withstand bird contact, wind, and weather for years without sagging or breaking.
Specifying for your bird species
Not all bird wire systems are the same. The specification depends entirely on the species causing the problem.
Pigeon wires
We specify the wire height and breaking load to the bird.
Pigeon systems sit at around 90-100mm with a 25kg load rating, which is enough to deter without overengineering the installation.
Gull wire
Gulls need a heavier specification. They are larger, heavier, and land with considerably more force than pigeons, so the same specification simply won’t hold.
We use wire with a breaking load nearly four times that of pigeon wire, with the leading edge sitting higher to account for the wider wingspan.
Post spacing is wider too, but the spring tension is heavier to compensate.

Bird wire vs bird spikes
Bird spikes and bird wire both prevent birds from landing on ledges, but they work in different ways and suit different situations.
Bird spikes are visible.
They’re effective and long-lasting. But you can see them from the ground, and on the front elevation of a hotel, a listed church, or a Georgian townhouse, visible spikes change the character of the building.
Bird wire achieves the same result without the visual impact.
The posts are small, the wires are thin, and the whole system blends into the building from any distance.
For straightforward ledge protection on a building where appearance isn’t a concern, spikes are often the simpler and more cost-effective choice.
But for buildings where discretion matters, bird wire is the better option.
Bird wire vs netting
Bird netting completely excludes birds from an area by creating a sealed barrier.
It’s the most effective method for large-scale exclusion, such as loading bays, undercrofts, and entire roof areas. Although it is very effective at excluding pest bird species, it changes the look of the building.
Bird wire protects specific ledges and surfaces without enclosing the space.
It doesn’t block access, it doesn’t alter the building’s appearance, and it doesn’t need removing every time someone needs to reach the gutters or clean the windows.
For ledge-level bird problems on the face of a building, bird wire is usually the right choice. And for large open areas where birds are getting inside, netting is more appropriate.
Light to medium bird pressure
Bird wire systems are best suited to light to medium pest bird infestation pressures.
They work well where pigeons and seagulls are perching on ledges during the day, roosting overnight, or beginning to nest in sheltered corners.
For these levels of bird activity, a properly installed wire system will deter the birds and keep them from returning.
For heavy infestations with large established colonies, significant guano build-up, and birds nesting in enclosed spaces, wire alone may not be enough.
In those situations, we’d typically recommend netting for the main infestation areas and wire for the secondary perching spots around the building.
The two systems work well together, with netting doing the heavy lifting and wire protecting the ledges and features that netting can’t cover.

Both species return to the same perching sites year after year unless the site is proofed.
