The 24th Glasgow Business Awards run by the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotland, was held on the 6th of October 2022. The team here at Pest Solutions were proud to be announced as the 2022 Glasgow Business Awards Winner for the “Community Wealth Building” Award and commended for the “Best Performing Small to Medium Business” Award.
The competition was extremely high as these prestigious awards brought the best of the Glasgow business community together to celebrate excellence. We were humbled to be awarded as the winner of the 2022 Glasgow Business Awards “Community Wealth Building” Award. Giving back and creating a sustainable link to the communities where we operate is so important to us as a business. It is part of our identity here at Pest Solutions. This makes it something that we are proud to be recognised for in this year’s awards.
Working in the pest control industry has very much historically been viewed as a “job” instead of a “career”. The industry demographic is mostly male, white, and over 40. The industry also currently has only 4.5% female representation in its workforce on average
Most people find their way into the industry by chance rather than intention. Many find an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling career, but we also have an over-representation of what we would call the “jaded journeyman”.
This has not been the best environment to promote and drive professionalism within our industry. Something that needs to happen for the industry to keep pace with the environmental and regulatory landscape that a modern professional pest control company must operate within to meet and exceed its obligations. The old ways of the industry rightly need to be left behind.
The failure of the pest control industry to recruit young professional talent means that all of the expertise in the industry is with the ageing portion of our workforce, and skill loss is a real risk.
Our work has been to educate through our recruitment process that this is a rewarding long-term career for young professionals.
Starting in late 2019 at Pest Solutions, we started implementing a new recruitment process based on recruiting into the business based on “Attitude First” and training for skills by investing in our training framework.
We have during the time since this recruitment strategy was implemented, we have seen the business grow significantly (doubling in the last 13 months), see a reduction in staff turnover, as well as industry and local recognition for customer service, excellence, commitment to training, business growth, the outstanding performance of team members in the industry awards.
We are champions of young people and women in the industry. Young professionals are our future, and their development is our responsibility. This has led us to hire the best people available (From Kickstart to Graduates), which resulted in almost 40% of our service team being female (industry average of 4.5% female).
