The Glasgow Chamber of Commerce has announced the shortlisted finalists for the 2022 Glasgow Business Awards, revealing the very best of the Glasgow business community. The Glasgow Business Awards returns for its 24th year with a black-tie ceremony hosted by Fred MacAulay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Glasgow Central on Thursday, 6 October 2022.

Giving back and creating a sustainable link to the communities where we operate is so important. It is part of our identity here at Pest Solutions. This makes it something that we are proud to be recognised for in this year’s awards.
Working in the pest control industry has very much historically been viewed as a “job” instead of a “career”. The industry demographic is mostly male, white, and over 40. The industry also currently has only 4.5% female representation in its workforce on average
Most people find their way into the industry by chance rather than intention. Many find an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling career, but we also have an over-representation of what we would call the “jaded journeyman”.
This has not been the best environment to promote and drive professionalism within our industry. Something that needs to happen for the industry to keep pace with the environmental and regulatory landscape that a modern professional pest control company must operate within to meet and exceed its obligations. The old ways of the industry rightly need to be left behind.
The failure of the pest control industry to recruit young professional talent means that all of the expertise in the industry is with the ageing portion of our workforce, and skill loss is a real risk.
Our work has been to educate through our recruitment process that this is a rewarding long-term career for young professionals.
Starting in late 2019 at Pest Solutions, we started implementing a new recruitment process based on recruiting into the business based on “Attitude First” and training for skills by investing in our training framework.
We have during the time since this recruitment strategy was implemented, we have seen the business grow significantly (doubling in the last 13 months), see a reduction in staff turnover, as well as industry and local recognition for customer service, excellence, commitment to training, business growth, the outstanding performance of team members in the industry awards.
We are champions of young people and women in the industry. Young professionals are our future, and their development is our responsibility. This has led us to hire the best people available (From Kickstart to Graduates), which resulted in almost 40% of our service team being female (industry average of 4.5% female).

It is humbling to even be considered a finalist in the Glasgow Business Awards “Entrepreneur of the Year” category. I feel a massive responsibility to lead our people in a responsible and sustainable manner whilst strategically pushing business growth forwards, looking after our customers better and creating opportunities for our people.
As well as several other businesses I own, I have the privilege of leading a team of 39 people within Pest Solutions, with 18 new jobs created in the last 13 months, as sustainable growth allowed us to double the business in size. Leading the strategy and our team towards a goal to double again in the next 18-24 months, becoming the largest independent pest control business in Scotland by the end of 2023.
It is my job to lead from the front and inspire our team as a helpful expert in the industry, and I am currently the only BPCA Master Technician in Scotland. But not for long as many of our team are working towards that status. My passion is to drive the professionalism of the pest control industry, which has resulted in me being elected President of BPCA (British Pest Control Association) in April 2022 giving me the opportunity to be involved in steering toward a bright future for the industry.
As a champion of young people and women in the industry, this has led us to hire the best people available (From Kickstart to Graduates), which resulted in almost 40% of our service team being female in an industry where the average female employment is 4.5%. I believe that our great people are the secret to our success.
This focus on driving professionalism has not only seen our business growth skyrocket but the business and our people have also been consistently recognised within the Pest Control Industry for their excellence. Most recently, Graduate Service Technician Gemma Sutherland won the “Young Pest Controller of the Year” award at the 2022 National Pest Awards. We were also delighted to have the business recognised as finalists in the “Large Company of the Year” Award and 2 of our other team members recognised as finalists in “Technician of The Year” (Stefan Polatajko) and “Young Technician of the Year” (Chloe Smith), narrowly missing out to Gemma.
I strongly believe that we can build a great business that our customers love and our people love to work for without sacrificing growth. In fact, I would go further and say it can be rocket fuel for our growth.
Looking at the list of finalists, I certainly feel like an imposter, but it is a privilege to be considered among the leaders of other great Glasgow businesses.
